Digital Asset Risk: A Practical Guide

Global Enterprise Financial Editorial Team · 2026-08-22

Volatility is the defining risk

Digital asset prices can move sharply in short periods, in either direction, for reasons that don't always relate to any single asset's underlying use or adoption. Anyone holding digital assets should expect meaningful price swings, not treat them as an edge case.

Custody and security risk

Whoever controls the keys or passkey to a wallet controls the assets in it. Losing access to a device or backup without a recovery plan, or having a device compromised, can mean permanent loss of funds — a different risk profile from a bank account with central account recovery.

Regulatory and availability risk

Which digital-asset products are available, and under what rules, differs by jurisdiction and can change. A product available in one market may not be available, or may work differently, in another — this is part of why availability is always confirmed by jurisdiction rather than assumed.

Scams and phishing

Digital asset users are a common target for phishing links, fake support accounts and urgency-based scams asking for a seed phrase, passkey approval or a 'verification' transaction. No legitimate provider will ever ask you to share a private key, seed phrase, or approve a transaction to 'verify' your wallet.

Practical habits that reduce exposure

Verify a receiving address carefully before sending, be skeptical of unsolicited contact asking you to move funds or approve anything urgently, keep the device securing your wallet updated and protected, and treat any investment-return promise with real skepticism.
